데보라 로 후영은 첫눈에 쉽고 친숙한 페인팅들을 만든다. 그의 작업 속 자연 풍경과 도시 경관은 편안하고, 사람들 간 상황은 지극히 평범하며, 등장하는 캐릭터들은 우리에게 공감대를 형성한다.
하지만 관객이 작품을 감상할 때, 편안함은 점차 사라지고 묘한 느낌이 그 자리를 채우게 된다. 작품은 어느 순간 이상하게 느껴진다. 인물은 지나치게 정적이고, 관점은 왜곡되었고, 풍경은 평면적이고 마치 연출된 것처럼 어색한 데다 색은 과도하게 선명하고, 무광에, 인공적이다. 데보라 로 후영의 작품은 기분 좋은 느낌과는 거리가 멀다. 대신 기이하게 미적지근하고, 인간미가 결여되어 있고, 심지어는 비판적이다.
데보라 로 후영의 작업은 진실을 그려내려는 작가의 시도이다. 최근 시리즈 <Green Living>은 비록 인공적인 것일지라도 자신을 자연으로 감싸며 거기서 치유와 명상을 찾는 한국인들의 ‘초록색' 환경을 향한 태도와 갈망에 대한 관찰이다. 사람들과 자연의 이 모순적 관계는 터무니없는 동시에 진실되고, 제멋대로이면서도 필수적이다. 그는 이러한 부조화적인 인간의 욕구와 필요를 인정하며 인간 본성의 복합성과 역설을 기록한다.
홍콩에서 나고 자란 데보라 로 후영은 한중 혼혈 작가로 한국에 살며 작업한 지는 올해로 3년째에 접어들었다.
Deborah Law Hu Young makes paintings that are at first glance easy and familiar. Her paintings of natural landscapes and cityscapes are comfortable, the human situations are banal, and the characters are very relatable. However, as viewers take in the paintings, their comfort slowly fades, replaced by a sense of eeriness. Deborah’s paintings are suddenly strange- the characters are too still, the perspectives skewed, the scenes too flat and awkward as if staged, and the colours too vibrant, matte and artificial. Her paintings are far from pleasant; instead, they are oddly lukewarm, impersonal, and even critical.
Deborah’s paintings are her attempts in portraying truth. Living and working in Seoul as a Chinese-Korean artist born and raised in Hong Kong, Deborah sees Korea through her unique worldview. Her recent series Green Living is her observations on Korean people’s propensity and desires for ‘green’ environments, where they find healing and meditate by surrounding themselves with nature, even when it is a man-made one. This oxymoronic relationship people have with nature is at once absurd and sincere, self-indulgent and essential. By recognising these dissonant human desires and needs, she documents these complexities and ironies within human nature.
